Difference Between Coal-Based and Coconut Shell-Based Activated Carbon
Both coal-based and coconut shell activated carbon remove impurities by adsorption, but the raw material changes the carbon's structure and therefore where each performs best.
Raw material
Coconut shell carbon starts from a renewable agricultural by-product. Coal-based carbon starts from different coal ranks, so its properties vary with the coal source.
Pore structure
Coconut shell carbon is generally rich in micropores, which suits the adsorption of small molecules such as chlorine, many volatile organic compounds, and gold complexes. Coal-based carbon usually has a wider mix of pore sizes, which can help with larger molecules.
Hardness and dust
Coconut shell carbon is generally hard and resistant to abrasion, which is important where carbon is moved or circulated. Actual values depend on the grade, so compare the hardness figures on each specification sheet.
How to choose
Start from the application and the contaminant, not from the raw material alone. Compare iodine number, hardness, ash content, and particle size across suppliers, and run a sample test where possible.
